How do you choose your career path? If you’re like most people your answer will probably be “I don’t know”. There’s so much to think about I sometimes feel like it’s impossible to figure it all out on my own. Luckily there are tools and resources available to help you make sense out what your career path might be. After exploring these options and coming up with your best choices for your career goals you can finally begin to make those decisions and begin on the path to realizing your goals.
To reach your dream job you have to be strategic with your choices. That’s where mapping out your career path in steps can be a big help. Your career path is essentially a series of jobs that you undertake that eventually lead you to your final dream job. Each step you take has a set of milestones along the way that you must reach before you get there.
Each of your short-term goals will help you determine how far along the path you are. Your long-term goals will show you where you’ve been and how far you are from reaching your final destination. You’ll want to chart your progress as well. While every step along the path to your dream job is important and is vital to reaching your final destination, each small step along the way is equally important and needed for success.
You have to start somewhere. That’s the first rule of choosing your career path. You need to choose a path by which you can get to your ultimate career goal. Even if you know you don’t have the skills or credentials right now you can still take a path that will eventually get you where you want to go. The only thing holding you back is your current circumstances and how those circumstances have held you back in the past.
Many people go wrong with their career paths by not doing enough research on the subject. They assume that all careers are the same or that some careers will be better than others. The truth is that careers have varying levels of stability. If you do enough research you can easily identify the types of careers that are more likely to give you the type of career that you have always wanted.
An example of a career path with a high degree of stability is the store manager. A store manager is in charge of the whole department store management and has many direct interactions with customers, suppliers, and employees. While this may seem like a great career path to pursue, a store manager isn’t likely to move up the ranks without a lot of extra education. For example, an assistant principal in the school district would have to obtain a degree in elementary or higher education before getting promoted to store manager.
Another example of a career path that is unlikely to change is a human resources career path. Although most employees in a human resources career path do not go on to achieve career goals, the job can still be very fulfilling and rewarding. However, the job does require a lot of training and experience to learn how to effectively reach career goals. Most human resources professionals don’t jump from one career path to another, but rather develop a specialty within a field and then continue to build upon that specialty.
It is important to have realistic expectations about your job market and career path. You should consider your skills, your qualifications, and your future goals before you make major changes to your career path. A career path that is full of aspirations but little direction will only lead to disappointment. Instead, work toward realizing your career goals and a rewarding and fulfilling career path.
